Reunification Therapy is a form of family therapy designed to repair a conflict between a parent and child. The extent of the conflict can vary greatly from no contact with no desire from the child to minimal and/or emotionally distant contact.

The primary goal is to repair the relationship between a parent and child who has become disconnected in some way.

The Road to Reunification
Phase 1
Context Setting & Planning for Success
Weekly for ~4-8 weeks
In-person is preferred

Individual therapy sessions with the child (and possibly the custodial parent, depending on age & situation)

Individual therapy sessions with a separate therapist for the reunifying parent​
Phase 2
Initial Joint Therapy Session
~1-3 Sessions
In-person is preferred

Joint therapy sessions between the reunifying parent and their therapist as well as the child and their therapist.

Goals are to gain comfort in working on the relationship together and begin to improve communication and heal past hurts.​​​
Phase 3
Parent & Child Therapy Sessions
Number of sessions will vary
In-person is preferred

Guided by a single ongoing reunification therapist.

Joint therapy sessions with the reunifying parent and child.

Goals are to improve communication, heal past hurts, set up goals for healthy relationships, and re-establish a positive connection.
Phase 4 & 5
Independent Outings & Beyond
Number of sessions will vary
In-person is preferred

Reunifying parent and child meet at parks, museums, restaurants, etc.

Guidance and input from reunification therapist and custodial parent
-
The reunification therapist will set goals for future engagement.

Referrals (ongoing sessions) will be made based on the needs of each individual.​​​​​
